I wrote this song based on Isaiah 42-45, specifically Isaiah 45:5-7, which says, “I am the Lord, and there is no other; besides Me there is no God. I am the Lord, and there is no other, the One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the Lord who does all these.”
Every time my faith in God is based on a piece of God, like His love, I fail to grasp the entirety of God and my faith fails. But understanding that God is the God who does “all these,” the good and the bad, the hard and the easy, every detail of every circumstance that affects me, then my faith, small though it is, stands. This is the God I have to believe in when life falls apart.
It seems to me that the most important question we could ever answer is the one Jesus asked His disciples in Matthew 16:15. Everyone had an opinion on who Jesus actually was, but Jesus asked, “who do you say I am.” To play it safe, I would have just said, “well, who do you say you are” and gone with that. So that’s what this song is, God, as He describes Himself, maker of light and darkness, maker and calmer of storms, bringer of prosperity and calamity. He is the God who does all these.
